For my first post I thought I would stick to the food that I've grown up with. The food that quite literally flows in my blood and makes up my chromosomes. My ancestors hail from a small village in Kutchh, Gujarat. So, of course I'm going to take you through the delicacies of the region where every preparation has some or the other element of sweetness in it - whether in small or large proportions; be it starters, mains or desserts.
If I were to be a euphemistic, I would say Gujaratis sport healthy sizes binging on the thousands of calories that they consume everyday which they claim is a sign of success.
The food here is essentially vegetarian and considering Gujarat is dry state, the students spending their years at the apex management institute are left disappointed. But, then who am I kidding. People always find ways around laws. :)
The starters in this cuisine are made up of snacks such as dhoklas (both white and yellow), khakras, handvo, khandvi, ghugra, jalebi fafda etc. The mains consist of Thepla with undiyo, sev tameta nu shaak, pulav kadhi, bajra no rotlo with brinjal odo, surti dal and rice. Their sweets if you were to distinguish from the sweet entrees and main consist of laddus made from all kinds of flour like urad, moong, wheat, etc. and also sweets like god papdi and mohanthal.
I'm sure most of you are aware of how delicious each of the above preparation is. If not then i would be happy to share any recipes that any of you wants to know so that you can try them for yourself in your very own kitchen.(Along with my grandmom's well kept secrets of course which no cookbook would give you.)
All in all every delicacy that we prepare is sweet to the core( barring a few snacks) and thats how we relish it - with copious amounts of jaggery or sugar. Forget about us having a sweet tooth. Our entire set of teeth is sweet!!!
I always tell my friends that I'm an unusual gujju as i absolutely lack a sweet tooth forget about having an entire set.
One evening I was out for dinner with a friend at a fine dine restaurant with an exquisite buffet of pan asian cuisine and guess what I started my meal with, chocolates!!! And the immediate comment that I got was,"Gujju!!!"
Like I said my chromosomes are made of it. Can't get it out of my system even if i wanted to.
Guess, I might have that one tiny sweet tooth if not an entire set of them.
